Bhutan joined the global celebration of World Music Day today, highlighting the healing power of music. Despite the summer rain, many people gathered to enjoy the concert in Thimphu. The concert featured over 90 artists performing different genres of music, showcasing the versatility of the Bhutanese music industry.
Over 40 singers and more than 40 dancers took the stage at Changyul Park. Artists said such a concert not only brings them joy but also allows them to show their music to the public.
“I have been singing for 15 years and have never celebrated World Music Day on such a big stage. I am very glad as someone who survives from music. The authenticity of Bhutanese music has remained true. The advancement in technology has only enhanced it,” said Hemlal Darjee, a singer.
“We can survive through music, through YouTube, Spotify, and shows. In the past, as musicians, our pay was less, and it used to be a challenge. They used to do two jobs, trying to make ends meet,” said Pema Deki, a singer.
“I have been doing music for four years. I don’t have much experience. Through my journey in music, I think our music could be at the top in Asian countries. There are a lot of talented artists,” said Andronicus, a singer.
The Department of Media, Creative Industry and Intellectual Property organised the concert in collaboration with M-Studio. According to the organisers, this kind of event is an opportunity to expand the market of Bhutanese music and connect the artists with the community.
“This kind of event needs to be conducted often, and then understand our artist. The World Music Day allows the artist to gather for one. Secondly, to check the progress of the artist and also review it. Art is freedom, but it is important to check their creativity and their reach,” said Ugyen Dorji, Organiser.
Events like this reflect the growing strength of the country’s music industry. With continued support and platforms, these voices are not just entertaining, but they are shaping a vibrant cultural identity for the future.
