Exactly a week on since the heavy aerial bombardment between Iran and Israel, the tension continues to grow in the Middle East. According to the Bhutanese Embassy in Kuwait, over 10 thousand Bhutanese live and work in the region. For now, they are reported to be safe and are going about their routines as usual.
Although no Bhutanese live in Iran or Israel, many are working in Middle Eastern countries such as Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Qatar. These countries are not directly involved in the ongoing conflict.
TikTok videos claim to show missiles passing through Bahrain, and similar videos are circulating on social media.
Despite this, Bhutanese living in these countries say their daily lives remain normal. They continue to work as usual.
Local authorities have informed them about the situation and advised them on safety measures in case the conflict escalates.
“When the world looks at the Middle East, it looks like it has become the hotspot zone for the conflict. And there is indeed a chance of a situation escalating anytime. In the case of Bhutanese living in Bahrain, our embassy has already informed us about the situation, and they keep us updated whenever they receive new information. They have told us to stay alert and be together,” said Jigme Tenzin Dukpa, a Bhutanese residing in Bahrain.
A resident living in Kuwait, Keshab Bhujel said, ‘There is no fear of war because Kuwait is not yet involved and the government has told us not to spread any fake rumours, but we have to stay vigilant. Everything is normal.”
“At the moment, all the services, like hospitals, institutions, business entities, and transportations in the UAE are as usual. However, we are being notified, and we are under their surveillance. We can rely on the UAE government’s efficiency and its management system. So, parents back home, please don’t worry. We are doing well,” said Kinley Tshering, a Bhutanese living in the United Arab Emirates.
The Bhutanese community remain in close contact with the Bhutanese Embassy in Kuwait and is notified on various social media platforms.
Ambassador of Bhutan to Kuwait Chitem Tenzin said, “Although there is a big war going on, there has been no impact or posed any danger to Bhutanese living in Arab countries. All are safe and sound, and have been carrying out their daily routine.”
He also added that preparations, such as aid facilities, food, and shelter, are in place in case the situation worsens.
“If the situation worsens then it might impact the people in nearby countries. However, I don’t think that is likely. Nevertheless, the local government here is constantly notifying the public including the Embassy. Bhutanese residents here are advised to stay in touch with the Embassy.”said the Ambassador.
The Foreign Affairs and External Trade Ministry also assures that they are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to act swiftly should the need arise.
