To diversify income sources and strengthen rural livelihoods, members of the Zambalha Cooperative, a dairy group in Pema Gatshel, have completed training in oyster mushroom cultivation. The initiative, supported by the Commercial Agriculture and Resilient Livelihood Enhancement Programme (CARLEP), aims to supplement dairy farming with mushroom production, creating new income opportunities for farmers.
Nearly 30 members of the Zambalha Cooperative participated in a three-day intensive training focused on oyster mushroom cultivation.
The program included both theoretical lessons and hands-on practical sessions, equipping participants with the skills needed to begin mushroom farming.
From substrate preparation to harvesting techniques, members were guided through each stage of mushroom cultivation. The hands-on approach allowed participants to gain direct experience and confidence in applying their new knowledge.
“The Zambalha group has primarily been engaged in livestock farming. Now, with the support from the agriculture ministry, we’ve received training on mushroom cultivation. We’re confident that this will benefit us going forward,” said Pema Wangdra, the chairman of the Zambalha Cooperative.
“This training is very useful for us. Since we grow paddy, we already have straw, so we do not need to buy it from elsewhere. That makes it even more beneficial,” said Yeshi Dema, a member of the Cooperative.
Another member, Kinzang Dorji said, “If we ever face challenges with our dairy group, mushroom cultivation could provide an alternative source of income. So, I believe it will be very helpful for us in the future.”
With CARLEP’s support and technical guidance from the Mushroom Spawn Unit at the Agriculture Research and Development Sub Centre in Khangma, Trashigang, the training is expected to help members make better use of their time and resources, enhancing both food security and rural income.
With new skills, members are now set to enhance their livelihoods and build a more resilient future.
