Farmers in Khangma village of Yurung Gewog in Pema Gatshel can soon expect some relief from water shortages. A new irrigation project, now nearing completion, is set to improve water access and help boost agricultural activities in the community.
Water for the new irrigation scheme is sourced from Gelongri, located below Bangdala village.
The community of nearly 100 households has been facing a shortage of water for years, limiting agricultural productivity.
“We receive seeds for free, so we plan to grow as many vegetables as possible. However, in the past, we struggled due to a shortage of water. Now that we have separate sources for irrigation and drinking water, things will be more convenient. We are confident that our livelihoods will greatly improve with this water supply,” said Tenlha, a resident of Khangma, Yurung Gewog.
“If water is available, we are considering buying more greenhouses and growing more vegetables. Now that we’re getting irrigation water, we’re thinking of expanding our cultivation,” said Melay Wangzin, another resident, Khangma, Yurung Gewog.
Once complete, the project is expected to boost farming. Gewog officials stated that the water distribution line will be operational by the next financial year.
The initiative aims not only to resolve water issues but also to empower villagers to produce organic farm products for commercial purposes, offering a new source of income for many.
“We are also planning to support land development by seeking assistance from the district to deploy excavators for interested farmers,” said Sangay Thinley, Yurung Gup, Pema Gatshl.
The project, worth over Nu 15 M, is a lifeline for the community that promises sustainable agriculture and improved livelihoods for the villagers.
