Art is a universal language, allowing people to express emotions, ideas, and experiences that are often too complex to describe in words. In Thimphu, 50 women artists are using art to share their stories, celebrate creativity, and honour resilience. Their works are on display at the 8th edition of the annual all-women art exhibition, HER EXPRESSION, at the Bhutan Art Gallery in the capital.

47-year-old Tashi Wangmo created a piece titled “Still Me’. It is a broken flower vase mended with stitches and band-aids.

The artwork tells the story of a mother of three whose passion for art triumphed over the many challenges and setbacks she faced in pursuing her dream. She says each stitch symbolises strength and perseverance, while every band-aid represents healing and moments of courage.

Tashi Wangmo said, “We can express our thoughts and emotions that are kept bottled up through art. I participated last year as well. I think we should let others know how we feel.”

Like Tashi, 49 other women artists have voiced their feelings, thoughts, and emotions through diverse forms, ranging from paintings and sculptures to photography and poetry.

“It’s a space for us to celebrate and appreciate each other as women artists, and also for other viewers to understand just how much creative power women in Bhutan have,” said Jetsuen Pema, a participant.

Lhachu Dema, another participant said, “I created this artwork with heartfelt gratitude for my husband and my team, whose support has shaped the person I am today. HER EXPRESSION taught me the importance of recognising my own worth and stepping beyond the confines of home. By participating in events like this, we open doors to new connections, experiences, and growth.”

“This time, I did a Mandela Crochet. So, I think, this platform is something that is a very good opportunity for all the young youths who are interested in the arts,” said Tshering Yangzom Sherpa, a participant.

The exhibition, which began on Wednesday, will remain open to the public until the 3rd of July.
