In an effort towards ensuring sustainable waste management, Phuentshogling Thromde has installed a reverse vending machine, launched in celebration of Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen’s birthday recently. The initiative aligns with Her Majesty’s vision of achieving a Zero Waste Bhutan by 2030.
This is the town’s first reverse vending machine installed near the office of the Bhutan Construction and Transport Authority. The machine will accept waste items like PET bottles, aluminium cans and glass bottles with no market value for recycling.
It turns trash into treasure, transforming discarded bottles and cans into real financial gain.
This is expected to reduce waste going to the landfill and enhance waste management. It’s not just recycling but a bold step towards a cleaner country and a smarter economy. According to the thromde officials, being a commercial hub, keeping Phuentshogling clean is a big challenge despite many initiatives taken for the cause.
Phuentshogling Thrompon Uttar Kumar Rai said, “Waste management and keeping the town clean have been challenging even after carrying out frequent cleaning campaigns, awareness and observation of Zero Waste Hour. Now with the machine, I feel people will be interested in making use of it. It will allow people to take care of their waste. Also, it will allow them to earn.”
A total of five machines will be installed at various places like the vegetable market, hospital, multi-level car parking and central park.
The Phuentshogling Thromde took the initiative in collaboration with a private firm.
While the Thromde provided the locations, the private company is responsible not only for installing the machines but also for their operation and maintenance.
Similar reverse vending machines, installed in Gelephu earlier this year, reportedly proved successful.
