With determination and home advantage on their side, Bhutan’s national women’s football team is gearing up to make a mark in the upcoming Women’s Tri-Nation Cup. Set to kick off at Changlingmithang this month, the tournament will see the team face tough competition from Hong Kong and Malaysia. For the players, it’s not just about clinching the trophy, it is a chance to sharpen their game ahead of the AFC qualifiers.
Participating in the tournament is an opportunity for learning and growth as the team prepares for the AFC qualifiers in June. However, a victory would add a shining star to the team and boost their confidence on the road ahead.
The team began intensive training on Wednesday, dedicating around four hours a day to sharpening their skills and refining strategies.
The players said they could not begin preparations earlier due to the ongoing Women’s National League.
“The team has been together for a very long time, we don’t have any new additions to the team. The team’s chemistry has been really good. We know each other very well. These international games are very important for us because they help us build confidence and get us the experience and exposure that we need,” said Pema Choden Tshering, the captain of the team.
“This Tri-Nation Cup tournament is a big deal for our team. We will be gaining experience and exposure from this game. We will be able to know where we stand before the AFC qualifiers,” said Sonam Choden, midfielder of the team.
The head coach has expressed full confidence in the team’s capabilities and is determined to lift the trophy on home soil.
Head Coach Kim Tae-In said, “It’s an honour to have this championship in Bhutan. We are preparing with the help of the Bhutan Football Federation for the Tri-Nation Cup. Currently, we are working towards maximising the player’s strength and skills. So, we will try our best to bring great results for Bhutan.”
The tournament will be played in a round-robin format. The Tri-Nation Cup is being organised by the Bhutan Football Federation, with participating countries selected through invitations by the host nation.
