A long-anticipated farm road is finally nearing completion in Chhimung Gewog of Pema Gatshel. Once complete, the road is expected to reduce travel time for residents and boost local economic activity.

The 11-kilometre farm road connects Khangma in Yurung Gewog to Awashing in Chhimung Gewog.  The work began in 2019 but faced delays due to steep cliffs and a shortage of machinery. The project received three extensions and is now approaching completion.

The construction is now in the final stage, with only levelling, aligning, and widening left to ensure the road is stable, safe, and motorable.

Many locals feared the project would be abandoned midway.

Chhimung Gup Yeshi Wangdi said, “The project had to start after the COVID-19 pandemic, which made it difficult to get materials and machinery on time. Additionally, several cliffs along the route posed challenges, causing delays.”

The project, costing over Nu 38 M, is expected to be complete by June.

Once ready, it will shorten the distance to the district administration and hospital by nearly 20 kilometres.

Currently, the residents rely on the longer district road via Yurung Gewog.

The gup said,”Since the district administration is based in Denchi, being able to transport vegetables and fruits within an hour will help keep them fresh. This will boost our income.”

Chhimung Tshogpa Pema Khandu said, “Travelling to the district will soon take only an hour instead of three. This will also help us reduce travel expenses.”

“In emergencies, we’ll be able to reach the hospital much faster,” added Pangthang Tshogpa Jigme Wangchuk.

“The second cutting work has begun from the opposite side, and vehicles have already started using the route. With the district headquarters now in Denchi, the new road will greatly reduce travel distance,” said Karma Lhundup, a resident of Chhimung Gewog.

If all goes as planned, the residents of Chhimung will have a shorter route, transforming daily travel and improving access to markets.
