Her Majesty Queen Mother Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck graced the opening of the 19th Tarayana Annual Fair today at Coronation Park in Thimphu. Members of the Royal family were also present. Commemorating the 70th birthday of Her Majesty the Queen Mother, a pictorial book titled “The Walking Queen” was launched at the event.

The book by Yeshi Zangpo, a documentary photographer who previously served as the Gewog Administrative Officer, is a tribute to Her Majesty Queen Mother Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck.

The book presents a series of photographs offering a glimpse into Her Majesty the Queen Mother’s transformative work across Bhutan, capturing the lives touched and communities uplifted.

Her Majesty Queen Mother Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck is the founding president of the Tarayana Foundation.

Her Majesty Queen Mother Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck said, “We are now serving in 1,000 villages across Bhutan. Our field officers live and work with the people, making their lives better. We recently employed 29 dedicated field workers who live among the communities, understand their needs, and consult closely with them. Tarayana is fully committed to serving every Bhutanese in rural areas who requires our support.”

Her Majesty also presented certificates of acknowledgement to 12 senior Tarayana employees recognising over a decade of their dedicated service to the foundation.

This year’s fair is held under the theme, “Celebrating Rural Prosperity: Strengthening Community, Sustaining Future.”

From local wines and cuisines to handcrafted bamboo products, the fair showcases a wide array of local products from across the country.

The fair will end on Sunday.
