Every year, artisans from across the country submit their best work of art for the National Design and Art Competition. Nearly 90 artisans competed in this year’s edition, a slight increase from last year. The annual competition, held under the Royal Patronage of Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck, intends to safeguard and promote the country’s unique cultural heritage through a competitive platform that recognizes and rewards the finest artisans from across the country.
Her Royal Highness Princess Eeuphelma Choden Wangchuck graced the 23rd edition of the National Design and Art Competition at the Royal Textile Academy.
The participants competed in six different categories of weaving Gho and Kira, embroidery, traditional painting, sculpture, and wood carving.
A panel of seven expert judges for each category evaluated the entries last week, before winners were formally announced today.
Ugyen Wangmo, winner of Kira Weaving Category said “I’m very grateful to the Royal Textile Academy for creating such opportunities for weavers like us. I look forward to participating again in the future and doing even better.”
Dorji Khandu, winner of Sculpting Category said “By participating in competitions like this, we help preserve our culture and traditions. It also allows us to proudly showcase our unique culture to tourists.”
Beyond the individual stories of triumph, the competition plays a crucial role in preserving Bhutanese heritage.
Kinley Wangmo, Assistant Conservator of Royal Textile Academy said “This competition provides a platform for the artisans to showcase their talents, and we will hold this exhibition for two to three weeks, where the artisans can also sell their products.”
The top three winners in all categories were awarded cash prizes of Nu 120,000, Nu 65,000, and Nu 32,500, respectively.
Her Royal Highness Princess Eeuphelma Choden Wangchuck also awarded a special Certificate of Master Artisan to the winners.
The exhibition will be open to the public until the 10th of May.
