Thimphu Magics lost to Nepal’s Times Club in their final match of the South Asian Basketball Association Club Championship today. Throughout the tournament, Bhutan played four matches against leading clubs from India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and the Maldives but was unable to secure a single win. The tournament held in India, ended today.
In their final match today, Thimphu Magics faced Nepal’s Times Club, ending their SABA run with an 87–59 loss.
Thimphu Magics lost to Maldivian Champions T-Rex, 47-71 in their opening match on Wednesday. The Bhutanese side showed moments of promise but struggled against T-Rex’s solid defence and efficient scoring.
In their second match, the Magics faced a dominant Tamil Nadu Club and suffered a heavy defeat with 66 point difference.
The third match brought another tough challenge against Colombo Basketball Club of Sri Lanka, where the Bhutanese side fell with 47 points.
Despite the results, the tournament was a landmark experience for the Magics. It marked the first time a Bhutanese club represented the nation on a regional platform.
Nima Gyeltshen, the head coach of Thimphu Magics said, “Climate is one reason that our team could not perform well. Another is about international exposure. Our team is competing in the international level for the first time. So, players are not that confident to compete in international level. I think the team could have done better. ”
Similarly, Sherab Jatsho, the team captain said, “Participating in the SABA Club Championship is unforgettable journey for our club Thimphu Magics. It tested our skills, team chemistry and self-resilience. More than just about winning or losing it was about growth, learning and sharing the love of basketball.”
The A-League champions from Bhutan will have the opportunity to participate in the SABA Club Championship every year.
The SABA Club Championship is a Club tournament that brings together elite clubs from South Asia.
It serves as a vital platform for international exposure, helping to raise the standard of basketball across the region.
