Local artisans and craftsmen in Trashigang now have a dedicated space to sell locally made crafts. The newly constructed craft outlet in Kheri-Pam was inaugurated today. The outlet was built to preserve and promote traditional craft culture by providing better market access, ultimately enhancing the livelihood of the artisans.
The newly constructed craft outlet in Kheri-Pam features nine units, a toilet, and a designated public stand.
This is the only craft outlet in the eastern region which is expected to ease marketing issues for the artisans residing in far-flung areas.
The Indian Ambassador to Bhutan, Sudhakar Dalela, and the Opposition Leader along with district officials inaugurated the outlet.
Wangyeltshen, an artisan said “In the past, we used to wait for customers to place orders and then only sell our products. But now, with the outlet opening, it will be convenient for us to bring our products here to sell. I think such a platform will encourage our artisan.”
Tshering Darjay, a businessman said “When we do business, we really need a good place to sell our products. This crafts outlet is located in a tri-junction, where people travelling toward India, Thimphu and to the east will stop by, making it a good spot to sell our products. I personally feel, this will change marketing for the good.”
To ensure sustainable use of the facility, the district administration will collect a minimal rent, which will be used to carry out maintenance of the structure.
The construction of the outlet began in December last year and was scheduled for completion by June this year.
The construction, worth around Nu 4.2 M, was funded by the Government of India through the Economic Stimulus Programme, undertaken by the Department of Media, Creative Industry and Intellectual Property in collaboration with Trashigang District Administration.
