Unclaimed green tax refunds of nearly Nu 4.9 M have been transferred to the government’s escrow account. During the Meet The Press session today, Finance Minister Lekey Dorji said some vehicle owners did not collect their refunds within the designated time frame. However, the government is allowing three years for vehicle owners to claim their refunds. 11 vehicle dealers were asked to refund after the revenue and customs department uncovered that they had overcharged green tax during an analysis of the impact of taxes on vehicle pricing.
The finance minister said, “If vehicle owners fail to claim their refunds within the given three-year period, the unclaimed amount will be transferred to the consolidated account. However, if an owner comes forward to claim their refund after this period, the Finance Minister has the authority to approve the refund from the consolidated account. This process is being carried out in accordance to the provisions of the Public Finance Act.”
