StudentAssulted-PUNEA third year Bhutanese student at the Indian Law Society’s Law College in Pune, was allegedly assaulted on Sunday by some locals.

Eyewitnesses say the four locals who had assaulted the boy, had been under the influence of alcohol. The incident had taken place at about 3:30 in the afternoon. The student had been with two other Bhutanese students when the locals began teasing them first, and when they refused to react, one of the locals snatched the victim’s sunglasses and provoked him to a fight.

Some other Bhutanese students and the President of the Pune Bhutanese Student’s Association had rushed to intervene, but the fight got out of hand and local police had to be called.  The BSA President told BBS the local police were more aggressive than necessary when they arrived on the scene.  He said he was held by his collar and slapped by a local policeman for allegedly refusing to divulge information about the whereabouts of the victim. The BSA President said that after the fight, he genuinely had no idea where the victim had run away to, and that the victim also did not have a phone on him.

We are waiting for information from the Bhutanese Embassy on this matter, and will be bringing you more on this as and when we have new information.
