As the film industry plays an important role in shaping language and cultural values, a comprehensive workshop is underway for proper usage of Dzongkha terms and Driglam Namzha. The initiative aims to refine language skills and etiquette among filmmakers. The training is being funded through the Economic Stimulus Programme.

One of the trainers, Kinley Tshering said that the proper usage of the Dzongkha language and etiquette has been declining over the years.

He highlighted that the film industry is one of the major platforms that many Bhutanese including youth look up to. Therefore, he stressed that people working in this industry must lead by example, using correct Dzongkha terms and maintaining proper etiquette.

“The use of Dzongkha and etiquette has declined not just in the film industry but across the country. Since many, especially the youth, look up to singers and actors, they must set a good example by using proper Dzongkha words and etiquette.”

Over 20 participants are attending the workshop which covers scriptwriting, dialogue delivery, and etiquette.

Kesang Wangmo, an actor said “As people watch us, they learn from us. But if we do not stick to proper usage of language and etiquette, people will be learning the wrong way.”

Phub Dorji, a Board Member of the Film Association of Bhutan said “The film industry is an influential platform that people, including foreigners, can look up to. Films help showcase language and etiquette. Therefore, it is important to train artists on proper usage of Dzongkha and etiquette.”

After attending the five-day workshop, participants are expected to use proper Dzongkha terms and etiquette, aiming to create films that can promote both.
