yOUTN&dEMOCRACYBhutan is a young nation with 60 percent of its population below the age of 22. By April this year, close to 90,500 youth between the ages of 18 to 25 will make up one fourth of the registered voters.

But will they come out to vote? A few young people BBS spoke to said they will vote as they have already realised the importance of electing leaders with whom they can relate to. But a few said they are disillusioned and do not want anything that’s got to do with politics.

On the other hand, the two new registered political parties are working towards making youth related issues their top priority.

In 2008 National Assembly elections, the youth age group was one of the highest turnout with 38, 361 total votes cast

The Chief Election Commissioner, Dasho Kunzang Wangdi, said he is optimistic that the turnout of the youth electorate this time will be even better than that of 2008. He is hopeful that the majority of the Bhutanese youth will exercise their right to vote.
