The long-delayed indoor multi-sports hall in Tsirang’s Damphu town is finally taking shape. With about 95 per cent of the work completed, the hall is expected to be ready within the next two months. Sports enthusiasts in the district eagerly await a new space to train, compete, and enjoy a variety of indoor sports.
The construction firm has yet to lay tiles for a car park and install carpet flooring.
The contractor said that the materials for the basketball court have finally arrived, and it is now just a matter of setting them up.
Other construction works are nearly over.
Once complete, the sports arena will feature courts for basketball, badminton, and table tennis. The hall will also offer spaces for boxers and karate enthusiasts.
The latest progress has brought excitement among sports enthusiasts, especially among the youths in the district.
“We were excited when we saw an indoor multi-sports hall being constructed in Tsirang. But we were equally disappointed when it was left incomplete. We had to go to school to play indoor sports. Now that it is nearing completion, we are very happy,” said Nima Tshering, a sports enthusiast.
“We are happy about the work progress of the sports hall because such facilities are rare in Tsirang. Moreover, girls do not get as many opportunities to participate in sports as boys. We will be happy if the construction is completed soon,” said Sangay Zangmo Sherpa, a sports enthusiast.
Sports enthusiast Deki Choden said, “Once the sports hall is open to the public, it will benefit us greatly as we will get to play. Having access to the facility will help us stay fit and active. Currently, we do not have such a sports facility in the district.”
The construction of the single-storey hall began in 2020 and was initially scheduled for completion in May 2021.
After missing multiple deadlines, the District Tender Committee terminated the previous contract in February last year.
The contract was then awarded to the current contractor in July, giving him ten months to complete the remaining work.
