The express highway linking Panbang in the east to Lhamoi Dzingkha in the west is one of the major projects in the initial development of Gelephu Mindfulness City. The ongoing first phase of the project connects Tareythang to Gelephu Town, beginning with bush clearing and land surveys. The road will significantly reduce the travel distance between Gelephu and Tareythang.

The express highway, once completed, will reduce the travel distance between Gelephu and Tareythang to 14 kilometres from the current 45 kilometres.

Five bridges, including a kilometre-long bridge over the Mao River, are expected along this stretch of the highway.

“We have five separate groups of surveyors. We are carrying out the work in coordination with DeSuung. There are 58 deSuups,” said Pelden Zangpo, a surveyor.

Three gewogs across the Mao River, Chhuzergang, Umling, and Tareythang, as well as Gelephu Thromde’s Namkhaling Demkhong, will benefit from the express highway, which will be constructed along the Bhutan-India border.

According to sources, landowners affected by road construction with less than 20 decimals will be offered either financial compensation or land replacement in another district.

Landowners with more than an acre of land will be given the option of land compensation within Sarpang or financial compensation, depending on their preference.

Karma Wangdi, Gelephu
