Gelephu celebrated this year’s World Children’s Day, marking 100 years of child rights. The two-day event features a series of activities aimed at raising awareness about children’s rights, mindfulness, and sustainable development. World Children’s Day, also known as Universal Children’s Day, is observed on the 20th of November.
To commemorate the day, a video series titled “I Am a Child” was launched. The series consists of six episodes focusing on child protection and the responsibilities of individuals in creating safer environments for children.
Save The Children, in collaboration with the PEMA Secretariat, produced the video series.
“The ‘I Am a Child’ campaign shares a perspective from children, expressing their needs and how the community can support them. While their rights are emphasized, the campaign also seeks to raise awareness of their responsibilities,” said Deepika Adhikari, Save the Children Bhutan.
Students from Losel Gyatsho Academy showcased an art exhibition at the launch.
The students also took part in a symposium on children’s rights and responsibilities, discussing key issues faced by children in the country yesterday.
“One of the key themes was their aspirations for a mindfulness city, with many issues being raised. They emphasized the importance of preserving the environment and highlighted their right to a clean, safe, and drug-free environment,” said Karma Doma Tshering, Country Director of Save The Children Bhutan.
The event was organised by Save The Children, the Bhutan Youth Development Fund, and VAST Thimphu.
