Observing inconsistencies in the way rituals are performed across Paro, the Rinpung Dratshang conducted a training programme for monks and lay monks. According to the dratshang, there are varying practices when performing rituals at homes and religious centres, with many not adhering to proper procedures.
Led by the Paro Lam Neten and a retired Gasa Lam Neten, 80 participants took part in the three-day programme.
The Lams talked about the importance of offerings and rituals and how to perform them. They taught about the handling of religious instruments and reciting prayers among others.
Kinley Tenzin, Lam Neten of Rinpung Dratshang said “in my five years serving as Paro Neten, I got the opportunity to visit all parts of Paro and perform rituals. I noticed that almost 80 per cent of the rituals performed are either inappropriate or performed wrong. There is no way, I can go at an individual level and correct it. But we hope that those who attended will go back to their community and share it with others. This will help in performing rituals uniformly.”
Rinchen Gyeltshen, a participant from Lango said “we have learned it from our seniors. We did not receive any training. Today, when Lams taught us, we have learned a lot. It will benefit us.”
However, Paro Lam Neten said that many lay monks did not turn up for the programme.
“Making mistakes, inappropriate preparations and reciting wrong or incomplete verses among others will not only bring negative consequences but it is a sin for oneself. Many did not turn up for the programme. Now, when I go around and perform rituals in the villages, it is my responsibility to hold accountability.”
The Rinpung Dratshang plans to continue providing similar sessions to further ensure that rituals are performed uniformly.
