After two years, the nationwide moratorium on vehicle import will be lifted from Sunday. The finance ministry in a news release this afternoon stated that the decision comes after a thorough review of the country’s economic situation, which indicates strong growth prospects.

In response to the anticipated increase in vehicle numbers after the lifting of the moratorium, the government will implement a new, differentiated vehicle registration system specifically for Thimphu Thromde.

Although there is not much clarity regarding the new registration system, the ministry says it will be distinct from registration processes in other regions of the country aimed at regulating the number of vehicles in the capital.

The government has, however, not specified details about the system yet. Concerned agencies said they are working on the new system.

The news release states that this initiative is expected to address potential challenges such as traffic congestion, pollution, and infrastructure strain, ensuring Thimphu remains a vibrant and livable city for its residents. The news release also says that the government is committed to managing the influx of vehicles to preserve the quality of urban life.

The vehicle import moratorium was introduced in August 2022 as one of the solutions to reduce spending amid falling foreign currency reserves.
