The Health Ministry is in the process of reviewing the National Blood Plan. The plan aims to ensure a steady and sufficient supply of blood towards achieving 100% blood voluntary donation by the end of the 10th Five Year Plan.
The first draft of the National Blood Plan is ready and being reviewed. Relevant stakeholders meeting with health officials say, they will be able to finalise and endorse the plan by the end of this weeklong meeting.
The workshop aims to achieve product safety of blood units that are transfused. It will also ensure that bloods are free from infections like Hepatitis B and C, syphilis and malaria.
The Health Secretary, Dasho Dr. Gado Tshering, said providing safe and adequate blood is the responsibility of the government.
Dasho Dr.Gado said the National Blood Plan will ensure timely and easy access to supply of safe and quality blood.
Doctor Mahrukh Getshen, the Blood Bank in-charge from the National Referral Hospital said with the National Blood Plan in place, they will be able to screen all collected blood units.
The screening of blood, doctors said will allow blood to be equitable, safe and accessible and adequate to meet the transfusion requirements of a patient.
