Senior officials from the home ministry and police met to review the deteriorating security situation in Sarpang. This comes in the wake of several abduction and assault cases reported in the Dzongkhag.

In the latest incident, a taxi driver was assaulted last evening on the Gelephu-Sarpang highway. Five men stopped the vehicle and the driver was stabbed on the hand.

The meeting chaired by the Home Minister, Minjur Dorji, looked at ways to beef up the security situation. One of the immediate measures being put in place is the closing of border gates at 6:30 p.m. until 7 in the morning.

The meeting agreed that in case of emergencies, travellers are required to inform the Police, local leaders or dzongkhag authorities.

Today’s meeting was attended by the Chief of Police Brigadier Kipchu Namgyel, home secretary, and officials from the Law and Order.
