NRDCLfinedThe Natural Resources Development Corporation Limited (NRDCL) was fined Nu. 1,55,000 for retrieving 500 metric tons of rolled-down-boulders from Dakpeychu. The boulders had rolled down from the new road NRDCL is constructing in Zhemgang.

The four kilometre new approach road is for the stone quarry site at Homdor in Tingtibi.

The Department of Geology and Mines in Gelephu, said NRDCL failed to comply with the mining regulations by retrieving boulders without notifying them.

NRDCL Officials in Zhemgang told BBS that the construction of the road was handed over to a contractor and that he is liable for everything that happens once he took over the project.

Meanwhile, people living on the either side of Dakpeychu are worried about their safety. They say the debris from the construction of the road might divert the course of the river which may cause flash flood especially during monsoon.

Speaking to BBS, the contractor said the construction was being carried out with due respect to the agreement. But, he says, difficult terrain made the progress impossible. He said he even approached the concerned authority to nullify the agreement. “A group people from NEC and NRDCL will be visiting the site,” he said.

The construction work has been suspended for time being.
