While presenting the Marriage (Amendment) Bill of 2024 in the National Assembly today, the Legislative Committee has proposed to raise females’ legal age of marriage to 18 years in the Bill, aligning it to other Acts in the country. According to the Chairperson of the Legislative Committee, the Marriage Act of Bhutan, 1980 was amended, however, the section, which states that marriage certificates will be given to males who are above 18 years of age and females who are above 16 years of age, was not amended. The Chairperson added that all other Acts have a uniform legal age of marriage which is 18 years, except that section.
