His Majesty The King graces opening of first session of fourth parliament

His Majesty The King graced the opening ceremony of the first session of the fourth parliament today. His Majesty was accompanied by Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen and members of the Royal Family.

His Majesty The King was received in a traditional Chibdrel ceremony by the prime minister, the National Assembly speaker, the National Council chairperson, the opposition leader, and the members of parliament.

On behalf of the parliamentarians, the speaker of the National Assembly, Lungten Dorji expressed gratitude to His Majesty for steering the nation through the COVID-19 pandemic. He also thanked His Majesty for initiating the historic Gyalsung National Service.

“In pursuit of strengthening our national foundation and enhancing the country’s economic landscape, the Gelephu Mindfulness City project is being developed under the direct planning and guidance of His Majesty. This initiative aims to set a global standard for excellence, fostering economic prosperity and development in Bhutan through economic and investment linkages with other countries,” the speaker said.

The speaker also extended gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian government, and the people of India for their financial support to Bhutan, which will aid in the implementation of Bhutan’s 13th Five Year Plan.

The speaker also extended prayers and wishes for the government to fulfill their pledges, tackle unemployment issues, and improve health care services among others.

He The speaker also expressed hope that the opposition party will play a constructive role in scrutinising the government’s performance while providing crucial support in areas of national importance.

The first session of the Fourth Parliament will see the National Assembly table the Budget Appropriation Bill for the fiscal year 2024-2025, the Air Services Agreement between the Royal Government of Bhutan and the Government of the State of Kuwait, 2024, the Impeachment Procedure Bill of the Kingdom of Bhutan, 2024, and the amendments of the National Assembly Bill of Bhutan, 2024, and the Marriage Bill of Bhutan, 2024.
