Concrete brick manufacturers in the country can look forward to improved business with the establishment of the Bhutan Concrete Product Association. The association was officially certified by the Bhutan Chamber for Commerce and Industry in Thimphu today. The association aims to help members who are struggling with marketing their products due to the surge in brick imports.

According to the president of the association, before the COVID-19 pandemic, there were 135 licensed concrete brick manufacturers in the country. However, the impact of the pandemic resulted in the closure of 15 such establishments.

Manufacturers attribute this to dwindling market opportunities which was worsened by the surge in brick imports. This posed a significant challenge to local manufacturers, threatening the viability of their businesses.

“We thought it would be beneficial for people who have set up their units but cannot market their products or approach the authorities concerned. So, a few of us thought we should have an association whereby we can help all our helpless members,” said Gyam Dhendup, president of the association.

The vice president emphasised the importance of members of the association to adhere to the requirements of the Bhutan Standards Bureau.

He highlighted that this is essential as the government recently announced plans to enforce the use of locally manufactured materials in public projects.

“The first step is for all certified concrete brick manufacturers in the country to produce bricks that meet the required standards. Then we will request the government to use our products in any construction works they have,” said Sangay Tshewang, vice president of the association.

The BCCI president said that the association will have to ensure its sustainability and recruit more members.

Currently, the association has 25 registered members and aims to add more. Of the 120 licensed concrete brick manufacturers in the country, 19 are BSB-certified with an additional 13 awaiting certification.
