In Samdrup Jongkhar, residents of Jangchubling village in Orong Gewog have finally found a solution to their years of struggle for reliable drinking water. The Orong Gewog Administration recently completed the construction of a new water supply. Clean and reliable water now flows freely, bringing hope and better health to every household in the community.

Pema Yangdon, one of the residents of the village, shares the struggles the villagers faced for almost a decade until the new water supply reached their doorsteps. She says it used to take almost 10 minutes to fill up this five-litre jerry can.

But now, with the new water source, Pema Yangdon can fill the same jerry can in less than three minutes. The old water source at Phuntsho Neg is small and has dried up.

Villagers say the new water source at Melang stream will provide them with sufficient water.

“Before, the water was insufficient. We were unable to use it in the garden to grow vegetables. It was just sufficient for drinking purposes. Now, water is supplied from the new source and it is adequate to use in the vegetable garden too,” said Pema Yangdon, a resident of Orong Gewog.

“Before, we had problems in getting sufficient drinking water supply. Now, we have a new water supply and it has solved our problem. We can also maintain good hygiene now,” said Chimi Rinzin, a resident of Orong Gewog.

“We had to frequently repair the water supply. But now, we have a reliable water supply. I am happy as water is very important for us,” said Sonam Chenzom, another resident of Orong Gewog.

The Orong Gewog Administration spent about 400,000 ngultrum to construct the new water supply. The government provided construction materials and the villagers contributed labour.

The new water supply has a 3,000-litre reservoir and a storage tank at the source with a 2.5-kilometre distribution pipeline. It will benefit about a hundred villagers in Jangchunling village.
