Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and President and CEO of World Wildlife Fund in the United States, Carter Roberts have launched the World Wildlife Fund, WWF-Bhutan’s Strategic Plan 2025-2029. It was launched in the capital yesterday. The strategic plan aims to deliver USD 30 M for the conservation of the environment and sustainable development over the next five years in Bhutan.

The WWF-Bhutan’s Strategic Plan focuses on conserving nature while promoting community prosperity.

Understanding the drivers of environmental degradation, the plan adopts people-centered, integrated approaches and diverse funding mechanisms.

President and CEO of WWF in the United States Carter Roberts said that WWF plans to further collaborate with the government to engage communities and advocate nature-based solutions.

He added that the plan aims to enhance societal, economic, and environmental benefits in the country.

“I look forward to being the partner of the government of Bhutan in crafting new financial solutions that close the gap that helps finance their growth and also that helps finance the conservation of nature. I look forward to working with you on defining the next generation of eco-tourism that has conspicuous benefits for people, and also how to make use of your forests without destroying it.”

Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay said that the WWF-Bhutan’s approach is important because it emphasises fostering ownership and responsibility towards nature for long-term conservation of the environment.

“Rather than depending solely on the government to conserve the environment, this strategic plan places the responsibility of environmental stewardship on the people. This plan envisages no less than 50 per cent of the population to become environmental stewards and champions.”

The strategic plan is for a five-year period from 2025 to 2029, with implementation commencing in July, this year.
