Instead of just 50, the Royal Monetary Authority (RMA) will exchange Ngultrum to Rupees for 200 people, every day. Each of them will be allowed to change Nu 5,000, only.
RMA increased the number after the Central Bank received Rs 100 M from India on Saturday.
However, the distribution will still be done through lucky dips.
RMA’s Governor, Dasho Penjore said they are expecting the reserve to last two weeks,
“After a week from today we will be again making requisition to RBI for replenishment so that we can continue supplying Rupee till the time we reach back to normal kind of stage where we will get around Rs 250 M per week.”
The Central Bank had brought down the number to 50 after the shortage of Indian currency following demonetization of Rs 1000 and 500 in India.
RMA is also working on the counter value of the Indian rupee deposits made in the banks.
“We understand that the freezing the deposits are creating lots of problem for the industries and the people as their cash is locked up.”
Dasho said the government have been constantly following up with the Ministry of Economic Affairs in India.
He said they are also following up through Kutshab office in Delhi.
Since the demonisation, exchange of Ngultrum with Rupees is available only with the Central Bank in Thimphu.
