The Opposition Party says they are saddened by the Prime Minister’s recent labelling of the Opposition’s stand as unpatriotic and disloyal. “It is derogatory remarks against the party,” says the Opposition.

The exchange of words first began in the backdrop of the government’s unsuccessful bid to secure a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council.

After Bhutan failed to secure a seat, the Opposition Leader had called government’s bid ill-conceived and misguided.

The Prime Minister had refuted the contention saying the stand made by the Opposition is unpatriotic and disloyal.

MP Damchoe Dorji, one of the two Opposition representatives in the Parliament said such remarks indicate that the government has no respect and regard to the institution of Opposition.

He said they were fulfilling the role of Opposition.  The Opposition had questioned the expenses incurred while campaigning for UNSC seat and the resources

“In the Constitution the Opposition party has crucial roles and responsibilities to shoulder. Of all the responsibilities, the most important one is to monitor whether the plans and programmes of the government are rightly done or not.”

He also said besides, the Opposition party, has the responsibility to see if the government implements plans and programmes in keeping with the law.
