A fifteen-day children’s art camp in Zhemgang provided rural children with a platform to showcase their creativity and talent during the winter break. For the participants, the break was not just about having fun but also a valuable time to get creative and more imaginative.

About 30 children studying in pre-primary to classes ten from Buli and Zhemgang schools learnt both modern and traditional art techniques. They explored pencil sketching, acrylic painting and even discussed important life skills and responsibilities.

The winter vacation art and painting camp provided them with a platform to build confidence and develop important life skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.

“I have always been interested in drawing but I never had a proper tutor. So, I fell behind. Now, I’m excited to have the opportunity to learn about various art skills. One of my favourite types of painting is called ‘opic colour painting’ because it allows for fewer mistakes and has thick layers,” said Sangay Wangden, a participant.

“I have learnt many things from this camp such as drawing pencil crowns, sketching, closure crowns and then drawing of trees and animals among others,” said Sonam Tobden, also a participant.

Tsewang Dorji, an artist and trainer from Zhemgang said many children spend their vacations glued to television or their phones.

He said the camp gave the students a chance to discover their artistic side and boost their creativity.

“These children are very keen. It would be nice if this kind of camp is organised again. Art is an interesting subject that our children can pursue as a career as they grow,” said Tsewang Dorji, a trainer.

The district education sector with support from Save the Children organised the fifteen-day camp at the Zhemgang Youth Centre.
