Construction of flood protection walls along Serkangchhu and Berzamchhu in Trashi Yangtse expected in 13th FYP

If everything goes as planned, the residents of Trashi Yangtse town and its neighbouring areas will soon no longer have to worry about getting washed away by the unpredictable swelling of Serkangchhu and Berzamchhu. The Trashi Yangtse district administration is prioritising the construction of flood protection walls and safety measures in the 13th Five-Year-Plan. The residents are currently living in constant fear of floods due to the swelling of the streams.

The Serkangchhu flows right through the Trashi Yangtse town and Berzamchhu flows between the town and the Chorten Kora.

Although the streams look small, they are known for swelling during unexpected times and seasons.

In 2021, Serkangchhu swelled resulting in a flash flood that washed away students and animals on a sunny day.

Similarly, the Berzamchu swelled in autumn last year although no casualties were reported.

According to the people residing near the streams, before a major mishap occurs, flood protection walls and other safety measures should be constructed. Almost about five years ago, a 450-metre-long flood protection wall was constructed along the Serkangchhu.

“We do not know when the stream will swell so, there is a risk. The stream swells irrespective of whether there is rainfall or not. We have to live with fear. Last year, the flash flood has nearly washed away our place,” said Sangay Chezom, a resident.

“It would be beneficial if there is flood warning system and construct flood walls,” said Ugyen Wangdi, another resident.

Their hopes and expectations will likely be realized in the 13th Five-Year-Plan. The district administration has prioritised the work.

“We have prioritised the work in the 13th Five Year Plan and has been submitted to the government. From the Green Climate Fund and Food and Agriculture Organization water project, around Nu 90 M is almost confirmed. We will carry out the work within one to two years,” said Tshering Dorji, Trashi Yangtse Planning Officer.

There are around 130 households residing near the two streams.
