The Bhutan Cricket Council Board (BCCB) launched the first indoor cricket academy today, aiming to make cricket available to everyone year-round. Located in Thimphu, the academy will provide training for national teams of various age groups and welcomes anyone interested in learning the game.
The potential players of the senior men’s national team, gearing up for the Asian Cricket Council Challenger Cup in February next year, were the inaugural participants on the indoor surface.
Situated on the top floor of the Multilevel Car Park near the Lungtenzampa bridge, the Thimphu Indoor Cricket Academy features five practice pitches.
One of the contenders for a place in the men’s team is the experienced player Manoj Adhikari, who has been a part of the national cricket team for over 20 years.
“This facility will enhance our coaching capabilities as coaches can now work throughout the year. They can also introduce new players. Being indoors, it is a convenient option for parents like me, I am a father of two, who do not mind sending their kids here. The facility is always clean and worry-free. In these aspects, it will consistently benefit Bhutan Cricket.”
Manoj said that the indoor academy meets international standards and will be advantageous for players with office commitments, as the facility can be utilised in the evenings.
The BCCB plans to offer memberships to the public and will assign coaches to train cricket enthusiasts at the academy.
“We are planning to implement marketing strategies because we need to generate funds for maintaining this facility. Our primary goal is to provide excellent facilities and a safe environment, particularly for kids enrolling here. Additionally, we aim to attract proficient coaches who can contribute to the development of these cricketers,” said Damber S Gurung, Chief Executive Officer of Bhutan Cricket Council Board.
The construction of the Thimphu Indoor Cricket Academy received financial support of about four-million-ngultrum from the Asian Cricket Council.
For the next week, the facility will be open to everyone for a hands-on experience with cricket. From 10 AM to 10 PM, individuals interested in batting can come and take their shots, and those inclined towards bowling can do so as well – all free of charge.
