With the 28th Conference of Parties, COP28, just in a couple of days, Bhutan is set to mark the conference with an emphasis on the commitment to carbon neutrality. The Conference of Parties brings together world leaders, government officials, NGOs, and climate activists to move together with a collective goal, address climate change issues and ways to tackle them. The COP28 will be held from November 30 to December 12 at the Expo City Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Bhutan will be represented by the Department of Environment and Climate Change and will negotiate at the conference as a Least Developed Country.

The country will share its low-carbon development strategies to remain carbon neutral as committed in 2009 during COP15 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

This year’s conference will focus on the fast-tracking of the energy transition, scaling up climate finance, and prioritising the well-being of people’s lives and livelihoods.

The COP28 aims for complete inclusivity in addressing critical climate issues.

Bhutan will negotiate on the agendas of carbon markets and capacity building of the developing countries and the Transitional Committee on the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund to negotiate the national interest separately.

Bhutan will be among the 198 nations attending COP28.

The country, for the first time, will showcase its commitment to addressing climate change and maintaining perpetual carbon neutrality through its debut pavilion.

The pavilion will showcase Bhutan’s efforts of unique sustainable development financing, green travel initiatives, and low-emission developments.

The Conference of Parties is the highest global authority for making decisions related to the climate crisis.
