In Samtse, the rabies outbreak in Duenchhukha Gewog’s Pungthra village is now under control. The outbreak was first reported last Wednesday when a rabid dog bit a 37-year-old man from Sertena village in Haa. The man has returned to his village and is following the necessary vaccination procedures.
The rabid dog also attacked a calf and four other dogs in Pungthra. The four dogs, which showed signs of rabies infection, were put down by livestock officials.
The calf, on the other hand, is in a stable condition.
While the source of the infection remains unknown, livestock officials suspect it may have been transmitted by cattle herders from Chhukha, who were in Haa.
Mass rabies vaccination for pet dogs will start tomorrow in Pungthra. This is the second rabies outbreak in Samtse this year. The first was a case reported from Ugyentse Gewog in August.
