To encourage children to learn about money and the importance of saving, the Bhutan National Bank launched piggy bank account in Thimphu today.

Children between the ages of six to 18, with their parents’ consent, can now open an account with BNB. They will have to deposit a minimum of Nu.100 every month for at least a year.

The Relationship Officer of BNB, Ugyen Wangchuk, said the scheme is designed for children to understand the habit of saving. “In near future whatever miscellaneous expanses they might be having will be met through their savings rather than always depending on their parents,” said Ugyen Wangchuk.

The children can open an account with the Bank by filling up a form and once they have the saving account, they can also open a recurring account by filling up a recurring account form.

More than 30 children have opened piggy bank accounts today.
