During today’s session at the National Assembly, members raised concerns regarding the capacity of small-scale businesses in the country to adhere to international standards following Bhutan’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). In response, the Minister for Industry, Commerce, and Employment affirmed that comprehensive plans are currently in progress to ensure that the country’s exports align with the international requirements.
“When joining the WTO, there are certain standards the country’s exports have to meet. To ensure that our exports meet international standards, we are planning to establish a “Standard body”,” said Lyonpo Karma Dorji.
“This will be a part of the 13th Five Year Plan, and we have set aside a budget of one million ngultrum for the plan. We also have other plans set up to support small-scale businesses in the country and help them export their goods after joining the WTO.”
