Getting reliable and safe drinking water has remained a struggle for residents of Gaytsa Chiwog in Bumthang’s Chhumey Gewog for years. However, the launch of a water project has made residents hopeful that it will solve their long-standing water problem. The project will be undertaken as a partnership project between the government and the Desuung National Service programme.

Construction works on the project began today with 70 Desuups stationed at the site.

They will construct a reservoir with a capacity of 30,000 litres, distribution line, public tap stands, and establishment of three multi-tap facilities.

The project is estimated to cost more than Nu 7 M. The Desuups will supply water from a new source.

Once complete, it is expected to benefit around 65 households in Gyaltsa, Buli, and nearby communities including a monastic school.

According to officials, the current water source is only enough for 20 households. As a result, water supply has been unreliable and often contaminated.

“The current water source that we have turns muddy during the summer. The new tank is located five kilometres away and the surrounding area and the water is very clean,” said Jampel, Chhumey Gup.

“The condition of the current water source is really bad. The new tank that will be constructed will be clean. It will not only help us right now but even in the future,” said Chundu Tshering, a resident.

The five-month-long project is expected to be completed by February of next year.

This is the third water project being carried out in Bumthang in collaboration between the government and the Desuung National Service programme.
