For the first time, the Centre for Simulation-Based Training at the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan demonstrated a high-fidelity simulator to the nursing staff and students coinciding with World Patient Safety Day today. High-fidelity simulators are life-like mannequins that react physiologically as if they were alive. They are used to recreate real-life situations and provide learners with an opportunity to practice and refine clinical skills without the risk of patient harm.

The Centre for Simulation-Based Training was opened at the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan in Thimphu last year. The centre encourages health professionals to achieve a high level of competencies in managing emergencies thereby improving patient safety and quality medical care

As part of World Patient Safety Day, a team from Khesar Gyalpo University demonstrated an emergency procedure scenario.

‘‘When we learn with this type of technology called simulation-based training, we get to feel as if it is real with the real patient. So, it gives more confidence to the trainees like me and my friends to get more experience and they can easily perform the task to the real patient very easily and in the more expert way,’’ said Sangay Dorji, a student of the Faculty of Nursing and Public Health, KGUMSB.

‘‘The demonstration we had today was a scenario that was derived from an ICU setting in the hospital where there was a crisis in the ICU. We created the scenario in our Simulation Center where we taught the students how that complicated situation is tackled. This area is a place where the student learns how to tackle this complicated situation in the hospital in a real setting,’’ said Tshewang Rinzin, an associate lecturer of the Faculty of Nursing and Public Health, KGUMSB.

The Centre for Simulation-Based Training has also developed Druk Sokchop Bhutan Life Savers Courses and an advanced simulation laboratory for curriculum-based simulation education and provided continuous professional development with a main focus on patient safety.

The centre aims to become an emergency hospital to support the National Referral Hospital in times of national crisis.
