To commemorate the birth of Her Royal Highness the Princess, the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary released four takins from their enclosed area today. The takins, consisting of two males and two females were kept in a six-acre forest for over ten months in Kektong Brangsa, en route to Merag Gewog, to acclimatise to the local environment before their release. The animals were translocated from the western part of the country in November last year. The sanctuary has released seven takins so far.
Meanwhile, the officials have tagged the released takins with radio collars to track and monitor their movements in the wild. Takin, the national animal of Bhutan is classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and is on the verge of extinction owing to hunting, poaching and habitat destruction.
