In Zhemgang, innovative training is enabling persons with disabilities to explore their creative potential through bamboo and cane crafting. The programme is not only equipping them with valuable skills but also opening doors to financial independence and personal growth. Amidst this initiative, seven people with disabilities and six young individuals are participating in a cane and bamboo art design course in the district.
Among the participant is Singye Lhamo, a 39-old deaf individual from Nangkor Gewog’s Goling village. The training has demonstrated that disabilities are not limitations but rather a source of inspiration and innovation. Within just two weeks, Singye has mastered bamboo crafting and proudly showcases her creation.
“Before, I was not aware of such opportunities. I consider myself lucky to have learnt various crafting skills.”
“This kind of training is incredibly beneficial. I can now make bamboo baskets, dustbins and even laptop stands. I genuinely joined to acquire these skills and I am glad I joined the training,” said Sonam Dawa, a participant from Haa.
“The training is a platform to develop skills and generate income. I hope to return to my village and craft bamboo items to sell,” said Phub Dema, another participant from Haa.
“This opportunity offers us lifelong skills in bamboo and cane crafting. We can either sell our products or use them at home,” said Yeshi Wangdi, a participant.
While training persons with disabilities presents challenges, the trainer emphasises the importance of patience and tailored teaching methods.
“I teach them with care and interest. Mastering the key skills is crucial, once that’s accomplished, crafting any bamboo product becomes easier and possible,” said Leki, a trainer.
Despite the initial challenges, these individuals are harnessing the beauty of bamboo and cane, reshaping their lives and societal perceptions of disability.
The two-month training is being organised by the Rural Development Training Centre in Zhemgang of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment.
The programme will conclude next month.
