The Bhutanese chess team has been able to improve its team rankings in the FIDE World Schools Team Chess Championship. The team won its 8th and final round of the competition yesterday. More than 400 students participated in the championship which was held in Kazakhstan.

The Bhutanese team entered the tournament ranked 37 out of 43 countries in the under-18 category.

After yesterday’s win, the team’s rank improved to 32.

The team played a total of 32 matches through eight rounds with four matches played in each round.

This meant four players played a game each in every round, while one player was kept as a reserve.

Team Bhutan was represented by Lhundrup Minjur Dorji, Pema Yangsel Dorji, Tshering T. Wangdi, Dolkar Lhamo Norbu and Jigme Younten Wangdi.

Of the 32 matches, the team won 11, drew 4 and lost 17 matches.

Each win would get a team one point, while it is half a point for a draw and losses have no points.

The Championship was played in two categories, Under 12s and Under 18s. Team Bhutan, consisting of five students all studying at the Dr. Tobgyel School in Thimphu, participated in the Under 18 Category.

More than 70 teams from 54 countries took part in the first World Schools Team Chess Championship.

It was aimed at promoting the sport of chess among students and providing a platform for children with the potential to showcase their skills on an international level.
