As the monsoon sets in, Thimphu faces a growing challenge with drainage problems and stormwater bursts. At around 11:30 pm last night, stormwater runoff struck one of the areas in Hongkong Market. A shop was affected and the nearby pedestrian footpath was damaged. Residents are now calling for immediate measures in fear of a major calamity in the future.

In one shop with residential rooms in the Hongkong market area, the water entered and flooded not just the shop but also a repair room.

During our visit to the affected area, BBS found out that the drain was blocked by various wastes like bottles, sticks, plywood and stones causing water to overflow onto the footpath.

This is the second time a stormwater event has hit the area in recent years and the residents are frustrated with the repeated occurrence.

“This isn’t the first time it’s happened in the area. Last time, the water wasn’t as bad but we still had to close the shop for three days. This time, everything in our house got soaked and we’re still cleaning up the mess,” said Tika Maya Ghalley, a shopkeeper.

“We were startled by the unusual sound of rushing water around 11:30 pm last night. To our dismay, the water burst through the wall and entered the house through the window, causing damage to our belongings,” said Kumar Gurung, a resident.

The situation is causing fear and discomfort among the residents making it challenging to live in the affected areas.

However, the Thimphu Thromde officials said that the damage caused by the water isn’t significant and they are working on the footpath maintenance which is expected to complete within a week.

Meanwhile, big puddles also form during heavy showers along the Swimming Pool road and the overhead bridge near Olakha. Water also overflows from the manholes in Thimphu town causing inconveniences to pedestrians and drivers alike.

As the authorities continue their efforts to address the issue, people say urgent measures are required to address the persistent drainage concerns to avoid such incidents in the future.
