Addressing the challenge of finding markets for local products, relevant stakeholders are taking different initiatives. In Gelephu, a day-long RNR products fair was held during the weekend. It was to promote and showcase products derived from locally available resources, benefiting both producers and consumers while boosting the local economy.

During the fair, about eight Bhutanese entrepreneurs from Dagana, Tsirang and Sarpang showcased their products such as chips, dairy products, tea, ice cream and pickles among others.

Some entrepreneurs said through such programmes, they are able to market and promote their products.

And it doesn’t end here. The Gelephu Thromde is planning to come up with an open market area at the teak plantation area along the Gelephu-Trongsa highway in Samdrupling Demkhong.

As per the plans, the market will be opened once or twice in a week like the Datgari market in India.

“It would be of immense benefit. We don’t have a proper place to promote and sell our local products till now. If we have access to such a facility, I feel we will be able to sell our products easily,” said Chhimi, Entrepreneur.

“Majority of the population are in the capital. We are not able to sell the goods in Sarpang like in Thimphu, Paro and Wangdue Phodrang. With the opening of such a market, we will be able to not only promote the products here but also in other countries,” said Depika Neopani, another entrepreneur.

The fair was organised by the Regional Agricultural Marketing and Cooperative office in Gelephu in collaboration with the Bhutan Chamber of Commerce Industry office.
