In the National Assembly, today, the Prime Minister said that to retain civil servants, the government is looking into the possibility of providing a retirement home package to retired civil servants, reviewing the national pension fund policies, and providing more employment opportunities in the teaching and health sectors. The prime minister was responding to a question from the Monggar MP, Karma Lhamo, about the government’s plans to address civil servant attrition.
According to the prime minister, the government is looking into a retirement home scheme for retired civil servants as a means to discourage civil servants from leaving their jobs.
The prime minister added that unless Bhutan creates opportunities like in other countries, it will be difficult to stop civil servants from resigning.
The prime minister further added that the government is currently reviewing the national pension fund policies.
“The civil servants must be paid well when they are in service and must have good retirement benefits when they retire. We are currently looking into the national pension fund to ensure that for our civil servants,” said the Prime Minister.
The prime minister informed the House that the government and the Royal Civil Service Commission are in talks to increase the number of civil service examinations and civil service intake to twice a year.
He added that employment opportunities for youth are being provided in the health and teaching sectors.
Apart from pay revision, the prime minister said that increasing the retirement age and unlimited civil service re-examination were introduced to address civil servant attrition.
The 2023 civil servant attrition rate is around nine per cent.
