More than 2,000 civil servants have resigned from office in less than five months this year. This is almost the same as that of 2022 which saw about 2,600 employees quit. But the Royal Civil Service Commission says they are making necessary recruitments to ensure the functioning of the offices is not affected.

According to Royal Civil Service Commission, the highest resignations this year have come from the Thimphu Thromde, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock; and the Ministry of Finance.

The highest attrition last year was from the education ministry.

Of the total figures, more than 1,400 civil servants were regular employees, and almost 400 were on contract. The numbers also include 124 contract employees who finished their contract terms, five who were compulsorily retired, another five who were terminated and 13 who died.

According to an official from the RCSC, while those resigning did not formally mention the reasons, they were found to have gone abroad after their resignation.

The attrition rate in the civil service right now stands at almost seven per cent. Last year, it was slightly over 8.6 per cent.

According to the RCSC’s latest annual report, there are over 30,000 civil servants including contract employees. 600 are currently on Extraordinary Leave.
