The Prime Minister, Lyonchhoen Jigmi Y. Thinley, met with the Secretary General of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Raymond Benjamin, at the Gyalyong Tshogkhang today.
Lyonchhoen said that the Royal Government and the people of Bhutan have gained considerably from the partnership and support of ICAO, and that it is a pleasure to receive the Secretary General.
He said the civil aviation in a small land locked country such as Bhutan is paramount. It does not only hold economic significance but also political significance.
Lyonchhoen also said that Bhutan’s tourism industry, which has grown considerably, depends upon it and that the royal government would like to ensure further growth without compromising quality and safety standards.
Raymond Benjamin, who is accompanied by ICAO Regional Director in Bangkok, Mokhtar A. Awan, said that they have had meaningful discussions with the Ministry of Information and Communication (MoIC) and Department of Civil Aviation.
He spoke about the importance of having a sustainable administration for Bhutan’s civil aviation.
The purpose of their visit, he said, is to have an understanding of Bhutan’s current situation, and offer short and long term assistance.
Lyonchheon also met with the Minister of International Development of Norway, Heikki Holmes today.
