In the latest World Press Freedom rankings released by the France based international non-profit organisation, Reporters Without Borders, Bhutan has ranked 90th this year, a drop from previous year’s position of 33. The score is based on political, economic, legislative, social, and security indicators. The drop in 57 places has been attributed to problems such as direct appointment of members of media regulatory body by the government, difficulties in getting access to state-held information, and self-censorship by journalists in the country. Globally, Norway is ranked first for the seventh year running, while China and North Korea occupies the last spots in the press freedom rankings.
