The residents of Samchholing Khamaed in Dragteng Gewog and Kela village of Tangsibji Gewog in Trongsa are still awaiting the Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project Authority to begin construction of their staff quarter. Around five years ago, the residents of these two villages sold more than 25 acres of land to the project for a little over two million ngultrum anticipating developmental activities in return. But today, with the plan still on paper, the villagers are unsure if it will materialize at all.

The Mangdechhu Hydroelectric project’s decision to construct a staff colony came as good news for the residents of Samchholing Khamaed and Kela villages. Initially, they were reluctant to sell their land to the project but were somehow convinced when they heard of the positive developmental activities that would come with the construction of the staff quarter. The MHPA planned to construct 33 staff quarters, each with four units, for more than 120 staff. Currently, they are staying at the MHPA colony at Dhangdung in Langthil.

“I have been receiving many complaints from my people regarding the plan the DGPC has yet to start. The delay in starting the work has left the people here confused. If the plan materializes, it would benefit my village which is one of the least developed chiwogs,” said Ngawang Dendup, Samchholing Khamaed Tshogpa.

“We have been expecting that it would really help us in terms of business, education and health if the colony is constructed,” said Karma Jigme, Kela Tshogpa.

The villagers were told that besides other opportunities, they would have easy access to the market to sell their agricultural produce after the construction of the colony.

Officials from the DGPC refused to comment on the matter saying they do not have the authority to speak. Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, the Chief Executive Officer of the DGPC who is also the media focal person is currently out of the station.

Reaping the benefits of developmental activities seems a far-fetch dream for now for the residents of Kela and Samchholing without any clear information on the construction of the colony as of today.
